Abstract

The present study seeks to analyze the nature of travelogues as a kind of knowledge related to the East. The issue is whether this knowledge of travelogue writing has objectivity or does it carry the systematic prejudices of the Orientalist discourse? Discovering dualities and analyzing the hierarchies governing them is the main problem of the present research. Considering the qualitative nature of the research, post-colonial literature is used not as a theoretical framework but for the theoretical interpretation of reading the text. The research method is deconstruction, which is based on David Boje's eight-point classification. The socio-statistical book of the Travel Book of People and Rituals in Iran by Madame Karlaserna and the sample of the research is Chapter 53 of the book (narrative from the city of Rasht), which was selected in a purposeful way. The results of the research indicate the existence of dual oppositions between East and West in the studied sample and the hierarchy governing them based on the general rule of superiority of the West and inferiority of the East. However, the women's protesting voice and the exceptions in the existing text make it possible to negate the satirical dominant stereotype.
